SURE- Sustainable and Resilient Communities

Empowering citizens and rural communities for a sustainable and democratic future

Sustainable housing and circular economy

Creating homes and communities that are affordable, climate-friendly, and built to last

This strand explores how housing can become more sustainable, affordable, and resilient by combining circular economy principles, community action, and innovative building solutions. It focuses on how citizens and local communities can shape housing systems that reduce environmental impact, use resources efficiently, and support healthier living environments.

Participants will explore how sustainable housing connects to major challenges such as climate change, energy use, resource efficiency, and rural development. Through real-life examples and hands-on learning, the strand highlights how local housing initiatives can contribute to European priorities such as the European Green Deal, the New European Bauhaus, and community-led sustainable development.

A key focus of the strand is learning from practical demonstration sites, including Earthship-inspired housing models that showcase how recycled materials, renewable energy systems, rainwater harvesting, and natural wastewater treatment can be combined to create self-sufficient and climate-resilient homes.

Contributing Organisations

Aaerdehuis Ecovillage
Aaerdehuis Ecovillage (The Netherlands)
Aardehuis will lead practical workshops focusing on circular and ecological housing solutions at the Aardehuizen ecovillage near Olst. The community serves as a living demonstration site showcasing sustainable housing practices inspired by Earthship architecture. Participants will explore how natural and recycled materials, renewable energy systems, and community-based design approaches can be used to create resilient and affordable homes. Through hands-on learning and guided visits, Aardehuis helps participants understand how circular housing solutions can support both environmental sustainability and strong, cooperative communities.
Ostoja Natury (Poland)
Ostoja Natury in Poland will organise the Biotech Workshop, where participants can discover regenerative agriculture and sustainable building in practice. As part of the Sustainable Housing strand, the workshop will focus on hemp building as a natural and environmentally friendly construction method. Ostoja Natury is a regenerative farm and learning centre that shows how hemp can be used as a breathable, energy-efficient insulation material. Through hands-on activities, participants will learn how hemp construction can reduce environmental impact, improve living comfort, and support more sustainable and resilient homes, while connecting housing with nature-friendly farming and community life
