SURE - Sustainable and Resilient Communities

SURE- Sustainable and Resilient Communities

Empowering citizens and rural communities for a sustainable and democratic future

Sustainable and healthy food for all citizens

Building resilient local food systems through citizen action, learning, and European cooperation

This strand invites participants to explore how food can be produced and shared in ways that care for nature, support local livelihoods, and help communities become more resilient. It looks at ecological and regenerative farming, local and short food chains, and the role citizens play – as growers, consumers, and community members – in shaping how food systems work.

Through open discussions and hands-on experiences, participants connect everyday food choices with bigger challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and food security. At the same time, they see how small-scale, local action can link up with wider European efforts, such as the Farm to Fork Strategy and the European Green Deal, and help influence how future food policies are shaped.

What You Can Learn?

  • Discover ecological and regenerative farming practices that help restore soil health and support biodiversity
  • Learn from real examples of local food systems and short supply chains, from small gardens to farm-to-fork models
  • Explore practical approaches to community gardening and small-scale food production, including hands-on methods such as deep mulching
  • Understand how citizen-led food initiatives and rural experiences can feed into local and European policy discussions
  • Connect with people from across Europe who are experimenting with new ways of producing food and revitalising rural communities
Who is it for?
  • Curious about growing food in ways that work with nature
  • Thinking about starting a garden, a small farm, or moving to a rural area
  • Already farming or working with food and looking for new, regenerative ideas
  • Passionate about climate action, biodiversity, and healthy local food
  • A student, researcher, or lifelong learner exploring sustainability and food systems
  • Interested in how everyday choices can shape policies and rural futures

Contributing Organisations

Ecological Institute for Sustainable Development
Ecological Institute for Sustainable Development (Hungary)
The Ecological Institute for Sustainable Development (EISD) will lead the Workshop on Ecological Farming and Gardening in Gomorszolos (Hungary). EISD is a long-standing centre for ecological education and biodiversity-friendly farming. It focuses on practical, hands-on learning, guiding people through techniques such as deep mulching, composting, sustainable water management, and nature-based gardening. By connecting everyday food production with broader environmental and social questions, the institute empowers citizens to care for biodiversity, build self-sufficient communities, and take an active role in shaping a more sustainable future.
Ostoja Natury (Poland)
Ostoja Natury in Poland will organise the Biotech Workshop to present regenerative agriculture and sustainable building methods in practice. Ostoja Natury is a community-run regenerative farm in Poland that brings sustainable food production to life. Founded to create a living model of ecological agriculture, it combines traditional farming knowledge with innovative practices such as agroforestry, natural and rainwater irrigation, regenerative grazing, and farm-to-fork food systems. As a learning and demonstration space, it welcomes citizens, farmers, and newcomers to rural life to explore how healthy soils, resilient crops, and strong local food networks can support both nature and rural communities.
